FOREWORD

This book was written during 15 months of never-ending Covid-19 lockdown in Toronto in 2020 and 2021.

I woke up one morning miserable, with no place to go, and decided to make it happen. The idea started expanding in my head and the vision of a book started appearing in my mind.

Having been in this breed since 1986 I know one thing for sure, that the breed is changing while the standard stays the same, as it should. It was my intention to bring the international modern history of the breed to one place, with top winners and producers of the past, and also to bring it to the future, so that everyone who gets involved in this wonderful breed has a clear understanding of its breed type, and what to breed for, show and reward as a judge. I passionately believe one must study the great ones of the past to understand what they had to offer in order to breed for, preserve, and know what to look for while judging this versatile breed.

I was a teenager of 14 years living in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 90s when I became a member of the English Springer Spaniel Club of Victoria (Australia) and received the club’s “Splashes” newsletter, which was way before  continue reading

ABOUT AUTHOR

I met Boris back in 1987, at a dog show in Zagreb, what was then Yugoslavia, as a 12 year old boy. The young boy, or rather the child, showed his first Springer, Aga, to me at the International show in Sarajevo in 1989. Aga was a pet quality dog, but the love for the breed that will last a lifetime was born.

Boris thought I could help and had no problem asking for advice. He wanted to breed Springers and asked for advice about the first litter.  I told him quite directly that what he had at the time was not the quality he wanted and dreamed about.  One great quality at such an early age was to accept advice, realistically look at your dogs, and start over and go in a search of a foundation bitch. The foundation bitch arrived in 1992, with a top pedigree and looked outstanding. At that time, ex-Yugoslavia was at war, and the circumstances for breeding dogs were bad.

Boris went to the USA in 1994, where he had the opportunity to learn from the best people in the breed and beyond. After 10 years in the USA, now as an informed breeder … continue reading

DREAMS COME TRUE

Dreams can indeed become a reality. One fateful morning, I awoke to an email from Heidi Hudson, the Curator of Photographic Collections at the Library of The Kennel Club of Great Britain. In her message, she expressed a request for a copy of “The English Springer Spaniel Global Review” for their esteemed canine library. Today, they graciously sent me their appreciation, a heartfelt note, and charming photographs.

I find myself deeply humbled and profoundly honored, for I stand as the first and sole author and cynologist from Croatia to have the privilege of having their work and book showcased within the illustrious halls of The Kennel Club library (the largest and most prestigious dog library in the world). It warms my heart to witness some Kennel Clubs acknowledging the relentless dedication we pour into the world of dogs and dog literature.

I eagerly anticipate the day when I can personally inscribe a copy of my book at The Kennel Club library during my next visit to London. Thank you everyone who helped me on this project and who just gave me a chance to do what I wanted to do without challenging me every step of the way. So many of you- you are my heroes.
